"In den Grooten Zalm" and "Den Kleinen Zalm" are two adjacent buildings on the Mechelse Zoutwerf and one of the best known and most beautiful city views. The imposing facade of the fishmonger's house 'In de Grooten Zalm' was built between 1530 - 1536. The facade is one of the earliest examples of early Renaissance in Belgium. Until the French Revolution it was a craft house for fishmongers. Afterwards it became the home of the famous Mechelen painter Willem Geets (1839-1919).
De Zalm recently underwent a gentle restoration of the outer shell (roofing, cleaning and repair of front and side walls, joinery) as well as stability.
